When working with brands, Engagement Rate by Reach (ERR) is a far more accurate metric than by followers, as the algorithm rarely shows content to all of your followers.

Stop Using "Followers" to Calculate Engagement

The legacy method of calculating Engagement Rate used to divide total interactions by total follower count. On modern algorithmic platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts, this metric is completely dead.

Because horizontal discovery networks show your content primarily to the For You Page (non-followers), a video might get 1 Million views when you only have 10,000 followers. Calculating engagement against your follower base would result in mathematically impossible engagement rates over 1000%.

Engagement Rate by Reach (ERR)

Brand sponsors and professional agencies now strictly use ERR to evaluate the health of a creator account. ERR divides total interactions (Likes + Comments + Saves + Shares) by the total Unique Viewers (Reach).

What's considered a "Good" Engagement Rate?

  • Under 1%: Below average. Indicates clickbait or bot followers.
  • 1% to 3%: Average to Good. Standard for highly commercial/product niches.
  • 3% to 5%: Excellent. Strong community sentiment and high trust.
  • Above 5%: Elite (Viral). Highly controversial, deeply emotional, or extremely valuable content.

The Super Metric: Shares & Saves

The 2024 algorithm weights "Shares" and "Saves" significantly heavier than likes. A video with 10,000 likes will die out quickly, but a video with 10,000 shares will be propelled into algorithmic virality.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Should I use total views or total reach?

Use Unique Reach. Total views includes duplicate watches from the same user. By using reach, your ratio accurately maps to one human individual per engagement.

Why does my engagement rate drop when a video goes viral?

This is completely normal. The algorithm expands your video into broader, less targeted audiences. These broader audiences are less likely to connect deeply with the content compared to your core audience, dragging the ratio down while pushing total views up.
